Joseph Agnes

February 9, 1932 — October 4, 2021

Joseph “Joe” Agnes passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 4, 2021, in Plano, Texas, due to complications from a stroke.

Joe was born in Paterson, New Jersey, to Felicia Ascolese Agnes and Aniello Agnes.  In early adulthood, Joe moved to Dallas and began a long career in the grocery business with Safeway. Soon after retiring from Safeway, Joe began his second career at Resource One Credit Union as a customer service manager, where he worked for many years until he fully retired.

Yet even in retirement, Joe never really retired. Joe had a servant’s heart and enjoyed being involved in the community and giving of his time and talent.  In the early 1990s, Joe was active in local politics serving on the City Council for Gun Barrel City, TX, and also serving as Mayor of Gun Barrel City.  In addition, Joe kept active with his church and could always be counted on to meet the call of whatever the congregation needed of him.

With Joe, you could always expect a warm smile, a funny joke, and a poorly fitted pair of blue jeans.  Joe had many talents, but he was especially gifted in the kitchen.  If you were lucky enough to be invited to his house for lunch or dinner, you could always count on multiple courses of home-cooked Italian specialties with plenty of food remaining for leftovers.  He truly lived his life to the fullest, and he will be deeply missed by all those that knew him.

Greeting Joe in heaven is his loving wife, Thelma Jean “TJ; Children Joseph Agnes Jr, James Agnes, and Teresa Kay Sanders (Agnes); Siblings Anne Agnes De Piro, Gilda Agnes Ruppi,  Esther Agnes; Parents, Felicia and Aniello Agnes.

Joe is survived by his children Christopher Agnes and wife Laura, Lisa Agnes Newman, Kelly Gober and husband Fred, Terry Compton and husband Steve, Robert Edgar and Connie Agnes.  He is also survived by his brother, Neil Agnes and wife Joyce. In addition, Joe is survived by many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to thank the medical staff at UT-Tyler and Medical City of Plano for the care and support they provided to Joe.  The family extends a special thanks to the congregation of First Baptist Church of Tool and Joe’s loving neighbors in Harbor Point for their love and support.

Joe was a life-long Christian and valued the importance of sharing God’s word.  Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be made to Gideons International, 50 Century Blvd., Nashville, TN 37214.

Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 12th at 10:00 AM at Oaklawn Cemetery in Mabank, 18056 E HWY US-175, Mabank, TX 75147.  After the service, a Celebration of Life and Reception will follow at First Baptist Church of Tool. 1001 North Tool Drive, Tool, TX 75143.
