Gary Steven “Steve” Murrey, 69, passed away on February 24, 2022. He was born on June 19, 1952, in Wills Point, Texas, to parents Winston Earl Murrey, Sr. and Velma Jo Penick Murrey.
He was the second oldest of four brothers: Win, Tim, and Mike. He spent his early years in Wills Point. He graduated from Wills Point High School and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Stephen F. Austin in 1973.
Steve was married to Susan Ashcraft Murrey Davies for 33 years. Together they had three children: daughter Stephanie and twin sons Matthew Steven and John Patrick Murrey. He later moved to Gun Barrel City, Texas, where he and his life partner, Jim Brooks, lived quietly by the lake where they enjoyed their dogs, outings to Dallas and Tyler, antiquing, and yard sales. Steve especially loved hunting with his sons, brothers, nephews, and later his daughter. He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, riding his tractor, and spending time with his grandkids.
He is survived by his life partner, James “Jim” Brooks; children Stephanie Murrey-Alonso and husband Michael and their two daughters Madelynn and Sara Alonso of Pearland, Texas; son Matthew Murrey and wife Ashley and their two sons Winston and Patrick Murrey of Benbrook, Texas; brothers Winston Earl Murrey, Jr. and wife Pat of Canton, Texas, James Timothy “Tim” Murrey and wife Kathy of Ben Wheeler, Texas, and Michael David Murrey and wife Cindy of The Woodlands, Texas; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents and son John Patrick Murrey.
