Corine Johnston

Corine Johnston, 85, passed away on January 8, 2024, in Athens, Texas. She was born on March 27, 1938, in Mabank, Texas, to parents RG and Jessie (May) Cabaniss.

Corine, AKA Maw Corleone or Maw Lee to those who knew her best, was a woman of strength and fearlessness who lived a life that left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege to know her. Known for her tough demeanor and unwavering courage, Corine faced life's challenges head-on without hesitation. She was the rock and cornerstone of her family; she was incredibly easy to talk to and everyone went to her for advice and comfort. Corine had a remarkable sense of humor, her quick wit and infectious laughter brought joy to every room she entered. Whether it was cracking jokes or sharing stories (and sometimes being honest to a fault), Corine created an environment that was filled with warmth and happiness.

Corine’s favorite simple pleasure in life was smoking her Clipper Blues cigarettes. She also greatly enjoyed betting on the drag races at the racetrack and had a love of Elvis Presley. Corine was a Christian who found strength and solace through her faith in the Lord.

One of Corine's proudest accomplishments was raising her boys. She poured her heart and soul into providing them with love, guidance, and the tools necessary to navigate life's challenges. Her dedication as a mother and grandmother knew no bounds, the love she had for her boys was immeasurable. Corine will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.  

Corine is survived by her son, Wesley Johnston and wife Misty of Mabank, Texas; grandson, Skyler Johnston of Mabank, Texas; grandson, Joey Evans and wife Jennifer of Conroe, Texas; great-granddaughter, Jade Evans of Mabank, Texas; great-grandson, Dylan Evans of Mabank, Texas; great-grandson, Tanner Evans of Conroe, Texas; son-in-law, James Evans of Mabank, Texas; and granddaughter-in-law, Kristi Evans of Mabank, TX, as well as other extended family and friends.
