Avris LaFern “Fern” McGibboney passed away peacefully at her home on September 24, 2019. She was born on August 4, 1928, in Phalba, Texas to the home of Henry Daniel and Essie Sally Matthews.
Fern was a singer who loved singing gospel and country western songs. She once performed at the Big D Jamborie at Panther Hall in Ft. Worth. She knew and sang with Ernest Tubb. She even made a record. When she wasn’t singing herself, she enjoyed listening to other singing performances. Her favorite enjoyment was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Fern is survived by her children Betty Gardner and husband Roy Gene, Bailey Houston and wife Laura, Lee McGibboney, Ricky McGibboney, Dorotha Barnes, and Jaunita “Sissie” Mason; grandchildren Danny Houston, Melony Houston, Rodney Gardner, Randall Gardner, Chrystal Nemeth, Kelly Driver, Michelle Young, and Misty Davis; 17 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren as well as many other family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband D. S. Houston; husband Fred McGibboney; sons Lee McGibboney, Dan Houston; daughter Pam Martin; brothers Vance Mathews and E.D. Mathews; and sisters Murl Henson, Marie Cook, and Fannie Mathews.
Dr. Jeff Campbell of the New Hope Southern Baptist Church in Post Oak Bend, Texas will officiate for the McGibboney family.
